Various sectors in Bacolod City mark 155th Bonifacio Day

BACOLOD CITY -- Officials and representatives of various sectors joined the commemoration of the 155th birth anniversary of revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio in rites held at the Bonifacio Park along Aguinaldo St. here Friday.

Councilor Bartolome Orola, who spoke on behalf of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, urged Bacolodnons to remember the revolutionary heroes who fought for freedom, especially against Spanish colonizers.

Part of the morning program was the laying of wreath at the Bonifacio monument and a tableau-presentation by pupils of the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School.

The program was also attended by teachers, policemen, barangay officials, and members of civic groups.

Bonifacio Day, held in honor of the founder and the Supremo of the Katipunan, became a holiday by virtue of Act No. 2946 passed by the Philippine legislature. The holiday was instituted in 1921.

Nove,mber 30 is among the regular holidays under Proclamation No. 555, series of 2018 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte.

On Friday afternoon, members of militant organizations, such as the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) - Negros and its allied groups, as well as members of the Partido ng Manggagawa held separate rallies on the streets of Bacolod.

BAYAN-Negros called anew for justice for the victims of the “Sagay 9” massacre in Sagay City and the killing of lawyer Benjamin Ramos Jr. in Kabankalan City, both in Negros Occidental. (PNA)
