Gastroenteritis claims 2 lives in Pangasinan

DAGUPAN CITY -- Two individuals have died from acute gastroenteritis in Pangasinan province this January, according to a report from the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

In an interview Thursday, provincial health officer Dr. Anna Teresa de Guzman said the two casualties are from the towns of Mangaldan and Binalonan.

The PHO reported that gastroenteritis cases in the province rose by 1 percent, with 666 cases in January this year, compared to the same period in 2017 with only 658 cases.

Most of those affected were children aged one to four years old.

De Guzman said Alaminos City reported the highest number of gastroenteritis cases with 44, followed by Bayambang with 43 cases; San Carlos City with 39; Sta. Barbara with 32; Calasiao with 30; Lingayen with 29; Binmaley with 28; Malasiqui and Manaoag with 26 each; and Mapandan with 24.

According to health experts, gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea, is an intestinal infection caused by consumption of contaminated food or water.

“We urge the public to practice proper food handling and preparation to prevent illnesses, especially when children are involved. They should regularly wash their hands, especially the children,” she added. (PNA)
