TESDA Isabela introduces 'Tower Plus' project

MANILA -- Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-Isabela (TESDA-Isabela) has introduced a project seeking to help augment the government's need for more construction workers for the "Build, Build, Build" program.

"Tower Plus project is an initiative of TESDA-Isabela. We are now contacting contractors so we could start onsite trainings and assessments. We also encourage more schools to offer programs for the construction sector," TESDA-Isabela Director, Demetrio Anduyan, Jr., told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Monday.

Launched last Friday, the Tower Plus program will provide onsite assessment and training to at least 200 workers. Anduyan said he is still waiting the contractors' reply regarding their preferred date of assessment.

According to Anduyan, TESDA central office has tasked provincial offices to address the scarcity of workers for the "Build, Build, Build" program.

Each office can come up with its own strategies.

"We had a dialogue with the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) and contractors. We also conducted a survey on the present and future needs of skilled workers," he said, noting that this project would work through collaborative efforts.

"We (will address the contractors') need for their workers by providing them with the training. We will assess their workers to identify the skills gaps and address these by providing them with supplemental training that can be done onsite," Anduyan said.

Meanwhile, the executive said there are already some schools applying to offer heavy equipment operations, welding, and other related courses.

TESDA-Isabela, he said, is also having dialogues with four construction companies, convincing them to apply as enterprise-based institutions.

"Tower Plus project intensifies our efforts so we can immediately address the need for more construction workers. Even our scholarship slots are being given to schools offering construction-related courses," he added. (PNA)
