Some P50-M marijuana plants destroyed in Kalinga

MANILA – A three-day operation by the joint operatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has resulted in the destruction of PHP49.6-million worth of marijuana plants in Tinglayan, Kalinga province last week, a PNP official reported on Sunday.PNP-Drug Enforcement Group (PNP-DEG) director, Brig. Gen. Ignatius Ferro, said the eradication operation was covered by Oplan Green Pearl Charlie in order to clear drug-affected barangays in Tinglayan particularly in Barangay Loccong.Ferro said 240,500 pieces of fully grown marijuana plants from a total land area of 14,200 square meters with a total value of PHP49.6 million were destroyed during the operation from June 27 to 29.He said that while there was no cultivator arrested during the three-day operation, government troops are continuously monitoring the area and will not allow the illegal activity of growing the prohibited plant.The PNP-DEG chief said the operation served as warning to the …

Giving alms to street beggars is against the law - CSWDO

ZAMBOANGA CITY, June 30 (PIA) -- Giving alms, whether in cash or kind to street beggars or mendicants is against the Anti-Mendicancy Law, or Presidential Decree No. 1563, an official from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) here reminds.Uldarico Fabian, division head in the CSWDO, said it is against the law to give money, food or any other forms of alms to beggars.“Even those beggars who present paper certifications when asking for money… you are not supposed to give them money,” Fabian said.He added that only legitimate organizations or groups with a permit from City Hall can legally solicit money or donations.The Anti-Mendicancy Law, Fabian explained seeks to ease beggars’ dependency on the sympathy of people, and in fact aims to help said beggars become independent from alms with the help of legitimate social welfare institutions.“In fact, the government has in place intervention programs and centers for them which can really help them,” he said.The result of giv…

Isolated rains over PH on Sunday as Egay moves west northwest

MANILA -- Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms due to southwest monsoon (habagat) will prevail over the archipelago, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Sunday. In its 3 a.m. forecast, PAGASA said the center of tropical depression "Egay", estimated based at 810 kilometers (kms)  east of Daet, Camarines Norte or at 940 kms east of Infanta, Quezon, is moving west northwest at 15 kms per hour, causing southwest monsoons to affect Luzon and Visayas as localized thunderstorms affect the rest of Mindanao. PAGASA warned the public against possible flash floods or landslides due to scattered light to moderate and at times heavy rains and severe thunderstorms. Ilonggos warned vs. leptospirosis

ILOILO CITY -- The Iloilo City Health Office (CHO) reiterated its call on Saturday for the public to avoid wading through floodwaters especially with the onset of the rainy season to prevent contracting leptospirosis.Dr. Bernard Caspe, city health officer, said Iloilo City has already recorded five cases of leptospirosis with one death based on their monitoring from January 1 to June 22.Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by leptospira spirochetes bacteria that is spread through the urine of infected animals, especially rats.The illness can surface this rainy season and Ilonggos are always reminded to use protective gear if they cannot avoid wading through possibly contaminated water, Caspe said.“I am urging the public, to the students who wade through contaminated waters and are not aware that they have open wounds. 16 villages in NoCot town ‘drug-cleared’

COTABATO CITY -- The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 12 (Soccsksargen) on Friday made public that 16 out of 24 villages in Kabacan, North Cotabato are “drug-cleared".Director of PDEA-12, Naravy Duquiatan, together with Kabacan Mayor Herlo Guzman Jr. and representatives of the police and military, led the program during which village chairpersons of the drug-cleared villages received certificates from the agency.The drug-cleared villages are barangays Bangilan, Bannawag, Buluan, Katidtuan, Kilagasan, Malamote, Malanduague, Nangaan, Osias, Upper Paatan, Pisan, Salapungan, Sanggadong, Simbuhay, Simone, and Tamped.“The evaluation assessment period covered January to June 25 and enough to declare the above-mentioned areas as drug-cleared,” Duquiatan said in a statement.She said documents were required from village officials before the declaration was made.Duquiatan said PDEA-12 will continue to monitor the 16 villages to ensure that they sustain the government’s anti-drugs c…

MANILA -- The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) is now on full alert following the blast that rocked the town of Indanan in Sulu, killing three soldiers and wounding nine others on Friday.NCRPO director, Maj.
