Brahminy Kite found in South Cotabato

KORONADAL CITY, July 31---The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XII on Monday, July 29 secured the safety of a Brahminy Kite after it was turned over to the agency by a concerned citizen.

According to Evangeline Marfil, chairperson of Bgy. Katipunan, Sto. Nino town in South Cotabato, a concerned citizen named Raymond Tejada found the raptor weak and wet due to heavy rainfall.

The barangay officials immediately coordinated with Brigada News FM in Koronadal City who asked the assistance of the DENR 12 for the surrender of the said wildlife.

Upon taking hold of the raptor, the DENR carefully inspected the features of the rescued animal and concluded that it is a young Brahminy Kite.

Forester Mangayao C. Macapodi, DENR 12 Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section chief noted that the wildlife is a domesticated animal.

“The bird is now being kept in the newly-opened Regional Wildlife Rescue Center (RWRC) located on the grounds of Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) - Lutayan Campus to secure its safety and protection,” Forester Macapodi said.

Dr. Neil Velasco, SKSU-Lutayan Campus Veterinarian said that the raptor is dehydrated and will undergo a thorough medication.

Forester Macapodi added that the RWRC is a venue to secure, protect and rehabilitate all wildlife species especially those that are turned over, abandoned, surrendered or confiscated wildlife.

“We are advising the public not to capture any wildlife species if they are in good condition. Let them live in their natural habitat. If they are injured, immediately turn over the species to the nearest DENR offices such as CENROs, PENROs, PASUs and the Regional Office to ensure their well-being,” Forester Macapodi emphasized.

He also stressed that the best help people can do for wildlife species is to let them live freely in their natural habitats. (Ana Leah V. Asim/DENR 12)
