Gov. Espino awards cash rewards to medalists of PWD nat’l sports fest

Governor Amado I. Espino, III took pride in lauding the Pangasinense persons with disabilities (PWDs) for bagging the second place in the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-Abled (PHILSPADA) national competition held in Bulacan on May 22-31.

On July 29 shortly after the regular flag-raising ceremony at the Capitol Plaza, Governor Espino led the awarding of cash incentives amounting to P158,000 to 27 PWD athletes from various localities of Pangasinan.

Each medalist received financial grants – P8,000 (gold medalist), P6,000 (silver medalist) and P4,000 (bronze medalist).

It can be learned that Team Pangasinan reaped 24 gold, 12 silver, and 14 bronze medals during the aforementioned national sports activity.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer (PSWDO) Emilio P. Samson said that the provincial government extended full support to the athletes who participated in the PHILSPADA this year.

“We are very fortunate because we earned the 2nd place in the overall ranking nationwide,” Samson stated noting that athletes dominated most of the sporting events, such as: track and field, chess, badminton and weightlifting.

Last year, Pangasinan clinched the overall championship in the PHILSPADA paralympic games.

As such, PSWDO chief assured that the provincial government will constantly uphold the interest and well-being of PWDs in the province.

Apart from the sports endeavors for PWDs, he added, the provincial government sponsors various trainings, such as a weeklong sign language training for PWDs and town focal persons, which was held also in celebration of the 41st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week Celebration in the province last week.

Governor Espino also led the awarding of assistive devices to some children and adult PWDs from Villasis, Umingan, Malasiqui, Aguilar, Bayambang, Sta. Barbara, Asingan and San Carlos City.

Recipients received assistive devices including six units of pedia wheelchairs, four units of adult wheelchairs, one pair of crutches and one unit of reclining wheelchair.

Samson stressed that providing assistive devices and financial assistance to PWDs has been part of the intervention efforts of the provincial government.

“Dumadaan sa assessment ng ating social workers ang lahat ng request for assistive devices and financial assistance,” he explained.

Also present during the brief ceremony were: Vice Govenor Mark Ronald DG. Lambino along with Sangguniang Panlalawigan members Donabel N. Fontelera, Vici M. Ventanilla, Nicholi Jan Louie Q. Sison, Jeremy Agerico B. Rosario, Rosary Gracia Perez-Tababa, Pangasinan SK Federation President Jerome Vic Espino and Liga ng mga Barangay Provincial President Jose G. Peralta.
