Fire displaces 100 families in Cagayan de Oro
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Around 100 families were rendered homeless on Saturday after a huge fire hit a big community here.
Damage was estimated at PHP500,000.
Most of the houses were made of light materials located at the boundaries of Puntod and Lapasan villages near the city's port area, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 10 reported.
According to their report, the fire started at the house of couple Apolinario and Leoncia Diaz.
Senior Fire Officer 3 Samson Velarde said the fire started around 8 a.m. Saturday and it took the fire fighters around two hours to put out the blaze.
Velarde said Leoncia, 68, was cooking their food for breakfast while she was also doing other chores in the house and was surprised when she saw her kitchen engulfed in flames.
Leoncia and her husband sustained minor injuries in their quest to put off the fire but their efforts proved futile as the blaze easily gutted down neighboring houses.
Other residents who also suffered fourth degree burns were Richard Capahigal, 26, and Sherwin Tahuyan, 39. They were rushed to a hospital for treatment for minor burns.
Adjacent to the fire scene is an oil depot that was protected by the firefighters to prevent possible explosion.
Meanwhile, Mayor Oscar Moreno asked the city social welfare and development office to immediately determine the exact number of families affected by the fire and to submit their assessment to his office for them to avail of assistance from the city's calamity fund. (PNA)
