New Marikina public market to keep roads obstruction-free

MANILA -- A new public market zone that will be opened this year will keep the roads of Marikina City free from obstruction, according to Marikina City Mayor Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro.

Teodoro said the PHP11-million Marikina City Bagong Sibol Market, located in Barangay Nangka of the city’s District 1, has the size of a basketball court and can house around 100 vendors with minimal rental fee.

“We develop places like this so that vendors can have a decent place where they can sell their products. We help them, at the same time, they help our local economy,” Teodoro said in a recent media interview.

“Ang sidewalk vendors ay problemang ekonomiya kaya dapat economic din ang solusyon. Ito ay ang bigyan sila ng micro-financing (Sidewalk vendors are problem of economy, so we also need economic solution. It is to give them micro-financing (program),” he added.

He said a three-strike policy has been helping Marikina City in maintaining its tag as one of the cleanest cities in Metro Manila with people enjoying obstruction-free sidewalks.

“Pinapakiusapan muna namin sila. Pinapaintindi namin sa kanila na ang sidewalk ay para sa publiko at hindi para sa negosyo (We appealed to them. We explained to them that sidewalk is for public and not for business),” he said.

Teodoro said the city has fully complied with the 60-day deadline imposed by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to clear roads and sidewalks of obstructions in Metro Manila.

“Based on the comprehensive manual report, there are 'non-applicable' remarks on us. It's because we have cleared many sidewalks immediately,” Teodoro said.

Teodoro earlier said the DILG might adopt Marikina’s manual report as benchmark for other cities in Metro Manila. He said Marikina will furnish a copy of their report to the Metro Manila Council (MMC).

The 60-day deadline given to local officials to reclaim public roads to ease traffic congestions was in compliance with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte, a former mayor of Davao City. (PNA)
