Leyte Province all set for 75th Leyte Gulf Landings commemoration

PALO, Leyte, Oct. 15 (PIA) -- The Provincial Government of Leyte is all set for the forthcoming commemoration of the 75th Leyte Gulf Landings Anniversary come October 20, 2019.

This includes all the venues and the activities being highlighted for this year’s celebration.

In a press conference held on Sunday, Oct. 13, Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla said all systems go for the commemoration knowing the preparations made by the different agencies and other stakeholders.

After the press conference, Governor Petilla, together with the Department of Tourism and other government agencies led the inauguration and switching on of lights at the newly-renovated Macarthur Shrine and Park in Candahug, Palo, Leyte.

The Department of Tourism has reported that the project cost for the rehabilitation of the Macarthur Shrine and Park totaled to P69 million under the DOT Yolanda Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Recovery Program.   

As the commemoration nears, Petilla emphasized that as always been in the past, the World War II veterans are the focus of this year’s commemoration, to honor them for their bravery and courage, who fought for peace and freedom against the colonizers 75 years ago.

“The veterans are the protagonist in this commemoration, not the officials nor the armies,” Petilla said.

In Eastern Visayas, there are around 105 living World War II veterans.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana is expected to be the commemorative guest speaker for this year’s celebration.

Foreign dignitaries from various allied forces during World War II are likewise expected during the significant and historic event.

Meanwhile, other activities related to this year’s commemoration include the exhibit of the national costume of Ms. Catriona Gray during Ms. Universe 2018 Pageant at Oriental Hotel; Liberation Day White and Red Beach Cruises wherein state-of-the-art pumpboats will be used during the tour along the coast of the famous Leyte Gulf; 75th Leyte Landing Choral Competition, a choral singing as a vehicle in promoting Philippine musical art and culture; hip-hop competition; Opening of the Agri-aqua Trade, Science and Technology Fair on October 16; Search for Miss Liberation Diamond, a beauty and brain competition of the millennials coming from the different provinces and cities of Region 8 that played significant roles in the liberation of the Philippines.

National Conference on the 75th Anniversary; Tolosa Signal Day Commemorative Event; Oktubafest competition; Vintage WWII Vehicles Show and Exhibit; Dulag Hill 120 Commemorative Event; Nemiranda Solo Exhibit; Barrio Fiesta; Sunrise Ceremony; Subiran Regatta; Reunion of Surviving Veterans and the commemorative luncheon for the foreign dignitaries and guests attending the commemorative ceremonies on October 20, 2019.

This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme “Keeping Alive the Valor of the Heroes of World War II.” (LDL/PIA-8)
