DILG conducts Constitutional Reform roadshow in La Union

NAGUILIAN, La Union, Nov. 29 (PIA) –  The Department of the Interior and Local Government in the Ilocos (DILG-1) took its last leg of the Constitutional Reform (CoRe) regional roadshow in Naguilian, La Union on November 21-22.

Activities during the roadshow include a townhall meeting attended by representatives of the local government units, provincial government and national government agencies; civil society organizations' consultation meeting; and convention rally attended by more than 1,000 stakeholders from the different sectors.  

The DILG-La Union also conducted a CoRe Talk attended by more than 500 students from the Naguilian National High School, as part of the roadshow.

Among the four pillars of the CoRe as discussed by Prof. Eric Daniel de Torres of the Center for Federalism and Constitutional Reform are enriching the provinces, outspan the Metropolis, government for the people and not by traditional politicians (Trapos), liberalization of the economy, and the new constitution for the future generations.

“Why do we need to stick to the old Constitution if there are identified loopholes, if the proposed amendments with the Constitution will be more beneficial  to the people, I believe there is hope in CoRe,” Justine Bryll Andrada, Grade 10 student, said.

Another Grade 10 student, VJay De Guzman, also shared his optimism with the CoRe, “I hope that voices of the youth will also be considered, as they say that our generation and the future will benefit from the reforms.”

The resource persons have highlighted amendments like the distribution of the Internal Revenue Allotment to the local government units taking into consideration their needs, own revenue collection and capacity; Regional Development Council to be transformed into Regional Development Authority with power and funds to implement regional projects and programs; and opening up the economy to foreign investments.  (JCR/AMB/JDS/PIA La Union)
