Iloilo gov’t boosts police capabilities

ILOILO CITY -- The Iloilo provincial government has shown its commitment to maintain the province’s peace and order as it turned over on Friday firearms to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).

Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. handed over eight assault rifles and a sniper rifle with scope to IPPO director Col. Roland Vilela.

In an interview Friday, Aaron Raymundo, General Services Office (GSO) head, said the firearms were procured with PHP1.3-million by the provincial government on 2018.

“It took a long process for the procurement and the processing of licensing and registration. We also secured a clearance from the chief of the Philippine National Police,” he said.

The turnover of firearms was the answer of the provincial government to the request of then IPPO director Col. Marlon Tayaba for assistance.

Aside from the firearms, Raymundo said Tayaba also requested for information technology equipment.

“Tayaba has requested for PHP2 million for the purchase of assault rifle and IT equipment. We allotted PHP1.3-million (for the firearms) because the other fund was utilized to purchase computers and laptops,” he said.

The assault and sniper rifles were meant to boost the armed capability of the IPPO’s Special Weapon and Tactics Unit (SWAT).

Raymundo said the GSO is also arranging the schedule for bidding of a police vehicle to also be assigned at the IPPO.

“We have allocated a PHP1.8-million budget for the IPPO patrol car,” he said. (PNA)
