Davao Occidental town boosts disaster info campaign

DAVAO CITY -- After a series of earthquakes jolted Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) has strengthened its information dissemination drive to raise preparedness among residents and mitigate the impact of calamities.

Jose Abad Santos MDRRMO chief Roger Deloy told Philippine News Agency on Saturday that the ongoing information drive is focused on barangays and schools.

On Thursday night (December 5), a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the town based on the report of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tectonic tremor occurred at 8:24 p.m. some 49 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos town. It had a depth of 54 kilometers.

“With the latest earthquake, we are just thankful that no damages occurred in the municipality,” Deloy said.

As part of the preparedness measures, he said evacuation signage have been placed in various barangays.

“Since we are facing the Pacific Ocean, we really have to be alert especially for possible tsunamis. That is why we placed signage pointing to higher grounds for the people to follow,” he said.

Deloy also urged the public not to panic and refrain from believing in unverified information in social media. (PNA)
