Firemen give Christmas joy to kids with cancer

CEBU CITY – Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Central Visayas on Tuesday spent early Christmas with children diagnosed with cancer.

Senior Superintendent Gilbert Dolot, chief of BFP-7, said their visit to a center that houses children with cancer was an expression of their mission in giving hope, aside from protecting lives and properties.

He said the fire bureau in the region partnered with Everlasting Hope, a non-government organization providing support and care to children with cancer and their families, in visiting 36 children who are diagnosed with different kinds of cancer ailments.

He added that their first visit to the center in May this year had sparked another hope of visiting again this Yuletide season to share their blessings as expression of charity to children.

“When I first visited here, I told our office that we will be their partner. It feels different seeing these children smiling, laughing and talking to you while at the same you feel the pain inside. It pains me also to see their parents, their families who manage to be strong for these children,” he told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).

The fire officers brought with them toys, basic medicines and food for the children while physicians and dentists provided free medical and dental services for the children, parents, and staff of the center.

The firefighters also rendered songs, dance and magic tricks that filled the small room with laughter from both patients and parents.

BFP-7 also donated an air-condition unit for the center.

The facility was opened in July 2016 in Guadalupe village here to provide temporary shelter to children from Cebu and neighboring provinces who usually come to Cebu City with their parents for medical treatment.

It also provides medical crisis program, transportation from home to medical clinic, and hospital visitation. (PNA)
