Barangay Fire Olympics highlights Fire Prevention Month in Maasin City

MAASIN CITY, Mar. 1 (PIA) – In line with the observance this month of March a Fire Prevention Month,  the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) - Maasin City Fire Station has lined up activities, the highlight of which will be a Barangay Fire Olympics, said Fire Officer III Raul A. Inocnado.

“A Fire Olympics is tentatively set on Mach 26, which is the highlight of the month-long fire prevention month here in the city,” Inocando said in a phone interview on Friday, Feb. 27.

He said the olympics will be participated in by around 15 barangays of Maasin City with an expected 10 participants from each barangay.

Inocando, who is the Information-designate of BFP said the participants will compete on firefighting techniques such as water bucket relay, firefighting using fire hose, emergency medical rescue, and the like.

“This Fire Olympics is one way of enhancing or re-orienting the skills that have already been taught since the barangay participating teams were already trained on basic firefighting skills years back,” said Inocando,

Among other activities prepared for the monthlong Fire Prevention Month include drawing/poster making and essay writing contests, sports fest, fire drill at Southern Leyte State University - Maasin City Campus and an open house for students for them to see and have knowledge on the fire fighters’ gears and equipment.

The monthlong activities will kickoff on March 1 with a Holy Mass to  be followed by a motorcade around  the city proper and a simultaneous blowing of sirens, Inocando said.

BFP will also provide services to some requests from the different stakeholders including non-government organizations such as fire drills, basic firefighting seminars and the like, Inocando said.

This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme, “Matuto Ka: Sunog ay Iwasan Na.”(ldl/rgc/PIA8-SoLeyte)
