DA6: Post your grown veggies

ILOILO CITY, May 3 (PIA6) -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas encouraged families to plant vegetables using available spaces in their backyard or through improvised containers to address food security during this time of health crisis.

DA-6 Regional Director Remelyn Recoter said that people in the rural and urban areas, who are involved and engaged in making their own vegetable garden, can contribute in intensifying local food production as the agency also launched their social media information drive dubbed “Binhi ko, Tanom ko, Post ko.”

“Social media is a promising approach to reach out to people, to inspire them or get them involved towards a good cause,” she said in a media release, adding that this initiative will help mitigate the adverse effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The social media campaign is in support to DA’s “Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat Laban sa COVID-19” (ALPAS) program, also known as the “Plant Plant Plant Program.”

Recoter urged the people who have availed of the vegetable seeds from theagency to share photos of their seed/plant status or seed planting activities through their Facebook accounts using the hashtag #postyourgrownveggies and tag theofficial DA-RAFID RFO VI Facebook account.

“The #postyourgrownveggies campaign intends to inspire and motivate others and to create impact awareness of the initiatives of the department to increase food production in the region,” she said.

She said that the DA High Value Crops Program has so far distributed 9,473 packets or 251 kilograms of assorted vegetable seeds to individuals and groups regionwide.

Meanwhile, Jonifer Frades, DA High Value Crops Program focal person, said they are still distributing free vegetable seeds as a continuous effort of DA Western Visayas, in accordance with the mandate of DA Secretary William Dar to realize the “Plant Plant Plant Program.”

Interested individuals or groups may coordinate with the nearest agriculture office in their area for seeds intervention or to the nearest DA-Research Outreach Station for the seeding dispersal. (LTP/DA-6/PIA-Iloilo/Thumbnail photo courtesy of DA HVCD Program)
