DENR confiscates over 15,000 board feet illegally-cut lumber in 1st qtr

CABARROGUIS, Quirino, May 21 (PIA)—The DENR-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office here reported during the First Quarter meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) yesterday that the two CENR offices in Diffun and Nagtipunan seized  more than 15,000 board feet of illegally-sawn lumber from January to present.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Mariam Frances Malana said the shipment of the lumber was intercepted in different barangays by the joint forces of DENR, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bantay Gubat and barangay officials.

The team of CENRO Nagtipunan intercepted some illegally-sawn lumber at Sitio Decoraban, Dicimungal in January and another confiscation in the same barangay took place the following month.

In March, some illegally-cut lumber were again intercepted at Brgy. Landingan, Nagtipunan. Two confiscations of illegally-cut lumber were done at Brgy. San Martin on April 27 and May 5 respectively.

According to Malana, some 4,452.66 board feet of the confiscated lumber were donated to LGU Maddela and Maddela District Hospital to be utilized in the establishment of COVID-19 isolation facilities.

Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Taripato Sagun said the seized lumber include common hard wood of various sizes.

“Cases of  violation of Presidential Decree 705 or the Forestry Code of the Philippines had been filed against the perpetrators,” Sagun said.

On the other, CENRO Diffun als   confiscated illegally-cut lumber with assorted sizes at Brgys Burgos, Villamor and San Marcos in Cabarroguis; Ligaya in Aglipay; Aurora West and Diego Silang in Diffun.

Malana assured that their team will continue to crack down illegal timber poaching in her area of responsibility despite problems on the lack of hauling vehicles, erratic cellphone signal and hardship of reaching the areas. (MDCT/TCB/PIA 2-Quirino)
