OMI priest now a bishop; newest member of CBCP

COTABATO CITY - An Oblate of Mary Immaculate (OMI) priest is the newest member of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) following his episcopal ordination Thursday at the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral (ICC) here.

Bishop Charlie Inzon will be sent to Jolo vicariate to serve the people and the Catholic faithful. He was consecrated by Cotabato Archbishop Angelito Lampon, OMI, DD as principal consecrator during the subdued Eucharistic celebration due to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Due to the restrictions of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Covid-19, the ceremony was not open to the public, and only 10 people are inside the cathedral.

Inzon is the sixth bishop of Jolo Vicariate, replacing Lampon who left Jolo vicariate in 2018.

Also present during consecration ceremony were retired Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, OMI, DD who served as the principal co-consecrator; and Kidapawan Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, DD.

Quevedo said Thursday was a special day for the Oblates because it is the feast day of St. Eugene de Mazenod, the founder of the OMIs, who died in France on May 21, 1861.

Inzon was the fifth bishop to be consecrated at the ICC during the past 69 years, Quevedo said.

The first to be ordained in the same cathedral was then Fr. Gerard Mongeau, OMI, as the bishop of the then prelature of Cotabato in 1951.

Eighteen years later, in 1969, Fr. Antonino Nepomuceno, OMI, was also ordained auxiliary bishop of Cotabato at the cathedral.

Quevedo said another 19 years later in 1988, Fr. Romulo dela Cruz of the Diocesan Clergy of Cotabato, was consecrated as co-adjutor bishop of the prelature of Isabela, Basilan.

In 2006, Fr. Jose Colin Bagaforo, DCC, was consecrated as auxiliary bishop of Cotabato and is currently the bishop of Kidapawan.

“I would like to thank those who prayed for me, worked with me. To my fellow Oblates, the Diocesan Clergy of Cotabato, Cardinal Quevedo, Archbishop Lampon, Bishop Bagaforo, and the OMI, thank you,” Inzon said in his speech after the ceremony.

Inzon will be installed at the Jolo vicariate later this month. (PNA)
