TESDA suspends trainings; offers free online courses

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, May 9 (PIA) -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has offered a personal enhancement and skills development opportunity to provide a chance for those who are staying at home to be productive. 

TESDA's Online Program is a menu of free online courses where learners and skills trainees need not go outside as technical vocational skills trainings are now at their fingertips.

And just as the generations X and Y are hooked on the internet and mobile gadgets, TESDA finds a venue to channel these energies with a huge upgrade to mobile gaming: there is a course on developing 2D games with HTML5, Game Production Basics, Developing 2D and 3D games with Unity, C# Fundamentals for Beginners and Software Development Fundamentals.

A response to the tough situation with the pandemic affecting global economies, businesses, communities, and families, TESDA has to adapt and yet continue to reach out to their clients, partner institutions and agencies through digital channels, TESDA Bohol Information Officer Rochelle delos Reyes said.

With Bohol’s Executive Order No. 9 series of 2020 which suspends classes in all levels, she said TESDA skills training and assessments provincewide have to stop, but with the Online Program, "we encourage the public, especially the youth to enroll to make our quarantine days productive."

She said students who may have yearned for academic challenge in COVID-19 times can learn some skills as the free courses also offer those with national certifications, one that assures a trainee work options after completing the course.

Courses offered for free online and with NC are Ship’s Catering NC III (updated) for maritime services, Beauty Care Services (Nail Care) NC II for personal care, and preparing cakes (1-4) in the Bread and pastry production NC II skills set.

Also offered under Cookery NC II are preparing and cooking hot meals, preparing stocks, sauces and soups (1 of 7), preparing poultry and game dishes (2 of 7), preparing seafood dishes, preparing egg dishes, preparing starch dishes, preparing vegetable dishes and preparing meat dishes.

For the preparation of cold meals set, offered are preparing salads and dressing, preparing sandwiches, preparing appetizers, and preparing desserts.

Under the Food and Beverage services competencies NC II, offered are introduction to food and beverage service (Beta) 1 of 3 Updated, providing table service (Beta) 2 of 3 Updated and providing room services (Beta) 3 of 3 Updated.

Under Housekeeping NC II, courses offered are providing Housekeeping Services (Beta), Providing Guest Room Services (Beta), Providing Valet Services (Beta), Providing Laundry Services to Guests (Beta), Providing Public Area Services (Beta), Dealing with Intoxicated Guests (Beta) and Front Office Services NC II.

For those interested with technologies in information and communication, TESDA online Program also offers ICT courses like Basic Computer Operation, SMART Android Mobile Apps Development for Beginners, SMART Techno-preneurship 101, Web Development using HTML5 and CSS3 and also has the above Microsoft online courses in game development.

TESDA also offers Udacity–Google courses like android development for beginners, UX design for mobile developers, Udemy Courses and Android 4.0 programming in Java.

For agri-related skills, offered are fruit growing, while under the automotive competencies are Automotive Battery Servicing and Diesel Engine Tune-Up.

For those into Electrical and Electronics, courses include Solar Night Light Assembly and Cellphone Servicing.

Under TESDA’s Entrepreneurship Training are Star Online Training Program, Star Online Training Program 2, Managing [Your] Personal Finances and Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB).

Under Human Health and Health Care NC II: Massage Therapy (BETA) are Course 1: Fundamental of Massage Practice, Course 2: Fundamental of Massage Therapy, Course 3: Swedish Massage, Course 4: Shiatsu Massage.

Also up for grabs in the free online course under Heating and Ventilation is Package Air Conditioner Unit Servicing.

TESDA’s online course also include personal development help in Lifelong Learning skills that include Job Interview Skills Training Course, How to Build Confidence in Your Abilities, and Skills to Succeed Academy.

As to the 21st Century Skills, on Environmental Literacy, courses include orienting Oneself to Environmentally Sustainable Work Standards, Exercising Sustainable Development in the Workplace, while Workplace Communication (BETA) includes Receiving and Responding to Workplace Communication, Participating in Workplace Communication.

As TESDA is the country’s state technical vocational education training agency, it also offers online Trainers Methodology I and Trainers Methodology II.

Interested prospective skills trainees can register at www.e-tesda.gov.ph using an active email account, enroll in the course of their choice, train and finish the course to get a Certificate of Completion.

And if the course chosen is part of the NC Qualification, one must finish all the units of competencies and go to the nearest TESDA Accredited Assessment Center to undergo the National Assessment (after the quarantine period) to get a National Certificate.
