E. Visayas Covid-19 count breaches 500-mark with 25 new cases

TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Visayas has 25 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections, bringing its total number of cases to 524, the Department of Health (DOH) reported late Monday.

In a statement, DOH Eastern Visayas Director Minerva Molon said the new cases are part of the 547 swab samples processed at the state-run Covid-19 testing here, of which 26 turned positive including the repeat test of a patient here.

Of the new cases, 17 are from Leyte -- nine in Bato town, three in Barugo, two in Ormoc City, and one each in Tabontabon, Leyte, and Kananga.

Five more residents in Southern Leyte have been infected -- four in Maasin City and one in San Juan; while the towns of San Sebastian and Daram, both in Samar; and Victoria in Northern Samar, have one case each.

“Our epidemiology and surveillance unit in the region is now working with the concerned local government units for the contact tracing. We are also gathering more information and reports about the new cases from these LGUs, if who among them are returnees or close contacts of an infected person,” Molon said.

The patients are currently confined in their respective isolation facilities but will be transferred to a higher health care facility if further management is needed.

Since the pandemic outbreak in the country, a total of 524 cases have been confirmed in the region, including 132 recoveries and three deaths.

The majority of the confirmed cases in the region are returning residents, including locally stranded individuals and repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFW), the DOH said.

Due to the sudden spike of confirmed cases in the region since the start of June, several local governments have decided to temporarily stop accepting returning residents to decongest its quarantine centers and focus its efforts on containing the spread of the virus.

On June 26, the Department of the Interior and Local Government officially suspended the travel of LSIs to the region until July 9, upon approval of the national task force against Covid-19. (PNA)
