Lizada advocates early retirement for government employees

                                        Civil Service Commissioner Aileen Lizada

CALOOCAN CITY, July 11 (PIA) --Civil Service Commissioner Aileen Lizada on Friday said she is in favor of lowering the age of retirement in the government service.

“Early retirement is one of my personal advocacies in CSC aside from a better retirement pay. I am talking in behalf of my office. I am for early retirement because I have gone around Luzon down to Mindanao. I have spoken to 49 government agencies and LGUs, heard the sentiments, 99.9% ang iba ay pagod na,” Lizada said.

The CSC official was asked during the Laging Handa Public Briefing yesterday to comment on House Bill 5509, a measure lowering the optional retirement age of government employees from 60 to 56 through an amendment of Section 13-A of Republic Act 8291, otherwise known as the "Government Service Insurance (GSIS) Act of 1997" that was approved on third and final reading.

“I agree with the lowering of the retirement age from 60 to 56; the proposed bill has been approved at the Lower House & it is up to the Senate. Let us infuse new blood to the system,” Lizada said.

At present, the Philippine has the highest optional retirement age in ASEAN countries which is 60 and the highest mandatory age which is 65.

Other bills proposed to lower the retirement age of government employees are as follows: House Bill No. (HBN) 8683 - An Act Lowering the Optional Retirement Age of All Government Workers from Sixty (60) Years Old to Fifty-Six (56) Years Old; Senate Bill No. (SBN) 1872 – An Act Lowering the Optional Retirement Age of Public School Teachers from Sixty (60) Years Old to Fifty-Five (55) Years Old; SBN 1222 – An Act Lowering the Optional Retirement Age of Public School Teachers from Sixty (60) Years Old to Fifty-Five (55) Years Old; SBN 1287 – An Act Lowering the Compulsory and Optional Retirement Age of Public School Teachers; SBN 1289 – An Act Lowering the Compulsory and Optional Retirement Age of Government Employees.
