DPWH SoLeyte  completes road leading to trade centers

MAASIN CITY, September 28 (PIA)–  The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Southern Leyte field office completed the construction of the P17 million road leading to trade and industry centers in Southern Leyte, according to the DPWH field office press release.

The 1.2-kilometer access road will provide better link for Patong, Ilaya, Nava, and San Juan villages in Hinunangan town. Specifically, the road aims to link these communities to raw material consolidators of coconut oil producer SC Global and agribusiness firm Kennemer Foods International in Sogod town, the press release noted.

Hinunangan town is a second-class town with residents primarily dependent on agricultural, fisheries, coconut industry, rice industry, livestock and poultry production, it was stated.

“We expect residents living along the alternative route to have a faster and easier way of transporting their agricultural goods to the trade centers,” DPWH Southern Leyte chief Ma. Margarita Junia said.

DE Junia said since the project started last February, the DPWH has been regularly monitoring civil works to ensure completion of the road networks on time.

She added that through the convergence with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), DPWH managed to identify sites that have the need for access roads, which would hopefully spur development for the communities near these sites likewise contribute to the holistic increase in the provincial income.

The project is funded through the approved finance road projects leading to various industries and economic zones dubbed as “Roads Leveraging Linkages for Industry and Trade” (ROLL IT) Program, a convergence between the DTI and DPWH, according to the press statement.

The initiative is patterned after the Department of Tourism – DPWH Convergence Program or the Tourism Road Infrastructure Program that resulted in the upgrading of roads leading to tourist destinations, it added. (DPWH SL / esg/PIA8 SoLeyte)
