Lockdowns result to drop in traffic-related incidents in Bohol

CORTES, Bohol, Sept. 28 (PIA) -- In Bohol, the fear of getting infected by the corona virus disease (COVID-19) and the police measures in keeping people off the streets and inside their houses has contributed much to the decrease in traffic-related incidents which could otherwise waste lives and damage properties.

During the recent virtual Provincial Peace and Order Council and Provincial anti-Drug Abuse Council Meeting here, Bohol police chief, Police Sr. Supt. Joselito Clarito, said the quarantine measures have contributed to the decrease in traffic-related crimes.

In their report to the council, Camp Francisco Dagohoy through Police Major Norman Nuez revealed that the total vehicular accidents recorded in police blotters across the island from January to September 2020 is 35 percent lower than those which transpired in 2019.

From 2,543 vehicular accidents which either resulted in physical injuries, damage to property, homicide or death in 2019, the number dropped to 1,648, sparing motorists and communities of the hassles associated with vehicular accidents in 2020.

The figures which reflect the cases between January to September 2019 and 2020 showed that in the first months of 2019, of the 2,543 vehicular accidents, 1,379 of these resulted to physical injuries, 1,078 resulted to damage to properties and deaths and homicide in 86 cases.

By 2020, the number of vehicular accidents reached 1,648.

Of the total, 797 of these accidents resulted to physical injuries, 803 accidents resulted to damage to property, and 48 persons were either hit, side-swept or were driver-passenger victims of the vehicular accidents.

While Bohol recorded a 35.19 percent decrease in traffic-related vehicular accidents in 2020 compared to 2019, physical injuries also dove to 42.20 percent from 1,479 in 2019 to 797 in 2020.

Records in 2019 showed there were 1,078 vehicular accidents while in 2020, there were only some 803 cases which resulted to damage to property.

As to the vehicular accidents which resulted to homicide or deaths, in 2020, of the 2,543 cases, 86 of the recorded traffic-related vehicular accidents resulted in the death or homicide of 86 persons.

By 2020, there have been 48 persons who were either driver or passengers involved in vehicular accidents who died or bystanders, pedestrians, or other motorists who were unintentionally killed due to these accidents. (rahc/PIA7 Bohol)
