Cardinal Advincula to get 'red hat' in Roxas City on May 28

MANILA – Manila Archbishop-elect Jose Cardinal Advicula will receive his “red hat” this month.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website reported on Wednesday that the ceremony is set to be held at the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral in Roxas City on May 28.

Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown will lead the rites and bestow the cardinal's ring to Advincula.

Fr. Emilio Arbatin, spokesperson of the Capiz archdiocese, said some 300 people will be allowed inside the cathedral in compliance with health protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Those who are allowed to attend the event are Advincula’s immediate family, some bishops, priests, and a representative from each of the archdiocese’s 67 parishes and mission stations.

In October 2020, Pope Francis announced the 13 new additions to the College of Cardinals, including the Filipino bishop.

The 69-year-old archbishop is the country’s ninth cardinal, following cardinals Orlando Quevedo, Luis Antonio Tagle, Gaudencio Rosales, Jose Sanchez, Ricardo Vidal, Jaime Sin, Julio Rosales, and Rufino Santos.

On March 25, the Holy Father appointed Advincula as Archbishop of Manila, succeeding Tagle, who is now the head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

The archdiocese has yet to officially announce the date of Advincula’s installation. He is Manila's 33rd archbishop. (PNA)
