Over 500 health protocol violators apprehended in Koronadal

KORONADAL CITY – Police personnel here have apprehended some 545 violators of health protocols and other preventive measures against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in a series of operations since last week.

Lt. Col Joefel Siason, Koronadal City police chief, said Wednesday the violations are mostly for non-wearing of face masks in public places and non-observance of curfew for non-workers from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

He said they also impounded some 47 motorcycles owned by the violators that lack proper documents.

The police official said the intensified operations, which started last May 3, were in line with directives from the city government, through Executive Orders (EO) No. 16 and 16-A issued by Mayor Eliordo Ogena.

EO 16 provided for the implementation of stricter modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) measures in the city while 16-A placed two barangays, Sta. Cruz and Gen. Paulino Santos, under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) due to the increasing Covid-19 cases.

Siason said the erring individuals, which included minors, were brought to the city police station to undergo lectures regarding the health protocols and other regulations.

“They were given proper warnings and allowed to go home after promising to comply with the Covid-19 measures and the MGCQ and MECQ guidelines,” he told reporters.

The official said he assigned additional personnel to patrol communities and monitor the observance of the minimum health protocols in public places.

He acknowledged that there are still residents who continue to ignore these measures, especially the wearing of face masks.

“We need the cooperation of everyone so we can prevent further transmission of Covid-19 and lower the number of new infections,” he said.

The Department of Health-Region 12 reported 25 new Covid-19 cases in the city on Tuesday night, bringing the active infections to 234.

The confirmed cases in the city since last year have reached a total of 1,237, with 23 related deaths and 980 recoveries. (PNA)
