DENR,Abra LGU lead river clean-up drive
BOLINEY, Abra, March 30 (PIA) –- In celebration of the World Water Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), in coordination with the local government unit here, led a clean-up drive along the Ikmin River, one of the main tributaries of the Abra River.
More than 100 workers from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office -Bangued and Lagangilang, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office including barangays officials participated in the clean up activity. They were divided into four groups with their own designated areas to clean.
One of the major concerns tackled during the exit conference was the waste from piggeries which are directly dumped into nearby creeks which flow down to the Ikmin River.

With this, Engr. Joyce Ann Mangsat of EMB is working with the LGU on the implementation of a memorandum with all barangays prohibiting households to directly dump their piggery’s wastes to the creeks. This is also pursuant to the Clean Water Act.
Vice-Governor Ronald S. Balao-as during the event urged the people of his hometown, Boliney, to actively participate in the reduction of fecal-coliform at the Ikmin River for safe water supply. He also appealed for the continuous support and assistance of the DENR in the preservation of the wildlife and protected areas of Boliney particularly the Bani hot spring.
The World Water Day celebrated every March 22 advocates the importance of clean water and sanitation in the development of local communities. This year’s celebration was anchored on the theme “Leaving No One Behind.” (JDP/MTBB/CAGT-PIA CAR, Abra)
