‘Down-to-earth’ DepEd chief inspires Kalinga teachers

TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones’ down-to-earth nature has left a positive mark that inspired teachers who met her for the first time.

Teachers from Tabuk City National High School said Briones inspired them on how to teach and mold students into better persons.

One of the teachers expressed gratitude to Briones for allotting time to visit the teachers in far-flung places to meet and talk with them last February 28.

“Most of the teachers were inspired by how Secretary Briones dealt with both teachers and students,” said one of the teachers.

The teachers lauded Briones' enthusiasm and good-natured character in dealing with the teachers and students of Kalinga, openly accepting requests to have her photograph taken with them.

Briones’ story about her experience as a young student also boosted the morale of teachers and students in performing their jobs and finishing their education, respectively.

During the visit, Briones told students to maximize the available resources in pursuing their studies.

She said that when World War II broke out, the only available resources for the students were banana leaves and sharpened bamboo sticks as pencils.

“Now, you students have pad papers, pencils, ball pens. You have the local governments helping you in giving nutritious food to make you healthy; the DepEd providing what you need; the churches, the civil society foundations these things are the indicators that the present education is heavier in terms of content,” Briones said.

Briones went straight to Tabuk after coming from Apayao province for the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association and witnessed the signing of a memorandum of agreement between DepEd-Kalinga, Kalinga State University, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority and the local government of Lubuagan.
