Sarangani participates in Earth Hour 2019

ALABEL, Sarangani---Sarangani Province took part with the rest of the globe in reducing its carbon footprint in the celebration of Earth Hour 2019 anchored in the theme “Connect2Earth.”

Earth Hour is a global environmental movement of World Wide Fund (WWF), aimed at inspiring and empowering individuals, businesses, organizations, and governments to take tangible action for the planet.

As the movement grows, the one-hour lights-out event continues to be the symbol of a broader commitment toward the planet.

On March 30, from 8:30 to 9:30 in the evening, Sarangani carried out the lights-off activity all over the Provincial Capitol with the objective of decreasing its greenhouse gas emission.

In 2012, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Sarangani created a system called Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Accounting, which determines the annual percentage of the greenhouse gas emission produced by the Provincial Capitol of Sarangani.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Accounting is an emission inventory which was developed to combine emissions of various greenhouse gases into a single weighted value of emissions.

Rolando Tuballes, PENRO head, said that after 2012 PENRO proposed for the establishment of solar-powered light posts in the Provincial Capitol after determining the huge greenhouse gas emission produced by the Provincial Capitol for that year.

“What happened in 2012 is the very reason why we have solar powered light posts all around the Capitol and we hope that through activities such as the Earth Hour, maintindihan natin ang importansya ng pangangalaga sa kalikasan at para masundan pa ang mga projects kagaya nito,” Tuballes said.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Accounting is done through collecting data from both stationary and mobile greenhouse gas producers at the Capitol.

These are the fuel and electric consumption of all the recorded official activities done by the province.

Earth Hour is now known as the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment and everyone is encouraged to participate and signify pledges to ensure a living planet for the generations to come.

“I am encouraging everyone, not just the employees here in the Provincial Capitol of Sarangani, but all the individuals who has the heart and cares for the environment to please participate in the… Earth Hour,” Tuballes said.

“Sa simpleng pagswitch-off ng inyong ilaw and other appliance sa inyong tahanan, these simple acts would ensure a big impact for the benefit of our environment,” Tuballes added.

Earth Hour was started in 2007 as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia and has eventually grown to engage more than 180 countries worldwide. (Joshua John Pantonial/SARANGANI COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE)
