Sarangani students receive new reading glasses

ALABEL, Sarangani--- Over 300 students from the different municipalities in Sarangani received new and fully examined reading glasses in an outreach program initiated by the provincial government through its Serbisyong Sarangan Outreach Program.

Commenced in 2016 by Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon, the program continues to extend medical and livelihood assistance to Sarangans, especially those who are living in the rural areas.

The four-day mission last February 19 to 22 was conducted in partnership with the Latter-Day Saint Charities, Department of Education, and Crystal Lenses Optical.

Four schools in the District 1 of Sarangani composing the municipalities of Alabel, Malapatan, Glan and Malungon benefitted from the program.

The beneficiaries included 52 students from Pangyan National High School in Glan, 140 students from Malalag Cogon Integrated School in Malungon, 87 students from Daan Suyan Integrated School in Malapatan, and 35 students from Pag-asa Integrated School in Alabel.

Frunnie Castillo, principal of Pangyan National High School commended the efforts given by the provincial government and its team for continuously extending the help and assistance to the students.

She added that the reading glasses will extremely help the students especially in aiding them in their education, especially those who have sight difficulties. “Malaking tulong itong reading glasses kasi there would be an improvement especially sa participation ng mga estudyante who have difficulties sa seeing.”

“There are times kasi na yung mga teachers, hindi din nila alam na may mga sight difficulties pala yung mga students kaya sometimes nagagalit sila kung bakit ganito lang ang kanilang performance sa klase,” Castillo added.

All the students who have received reading glasses have undergone series of prescreening in November last year.

Jhukarnen Jamalol, Serbisyong Sarangan Outreach Program staff, said prescreening is important so that students will receive the exact prescription of their reading glasses. “Naa tay prescreening para mabal-an nato kung kinsa ba toy angay tagaan that’s why pag nakapasa sila, exact reading glasses sa ilang prescription jud ilang ma-recieve.”

(We had prescreening so that we will know who are those that should really be given. If they passed, they will received their reading glasses with the exact prescription.)

“Goal ani is para makatabang para makabasa ang mga estudyante, tapos kini gwapo jud ni kay learning jud ni sa school, og para ma-improve ang life sa mga estudyante,” Jamalol added.

Aside from reading glasses, Serbisyong Sarangan also offers prosthetics for the impaired and medical assistance for those who have goiter and cataract.

On March 5 to 8, Serbsisyong Sarangan together with its partner organizations  distributed new and fully examined reading glasses in the District 2 of Sarangani composed of Maasim, Kiamba, and Maitum.

The beneficiaries were Colon National High School in Maasim, Kiamba Central Elementary School in Kiamba and Maguling National High School in Maitum. (Joshua John Pantonial/SARANGANI COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE)
