Mangroves planted in La Union in celebration of Earth Day

SAN FERNANDO CITY, April 30 (PIA) -- La Union residents joined the Earth Day celebration by planting some 500 mangroves in one of the new tourist spots in the province.

On April 26, the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) of the provincial government of La Union, in partnership with the local government of Balaoan, led the Earth Day activity at Immuki Island in Paraoir village.

According to Grace L. Libong, community development assistant of ENRO, some 116 individuals to include local officials, community members, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries and fisherfolks participated in the event.

“Immuki Island, which is considered as one of the developing tourism hotspots in La Union, is a biodiversity-rich area, so it was chosen as a venue for the protection and preservation effort in celebration of Earth Day,” said Libong.

She added that mangroves were planted as those have ecological value especially in protecting shorelines from damaging storm and strong winds, waves, and floods.

“Mangroves also maintain water quality and clarity through filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land,” Libong said.

Meanwhile, the La Union office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also conducted another mangrove planting activity in a National Greening Program site in Barangay Samara, Aringay town.

Filipina Atabay, information officer of PENRO La Union, said a total of 3,000 mangrove propagules were planted in the area.

In the Philippines, Earth Day was launched on April 22, 1990 to mark a global commitment to building a safe, just and sustainable Planet.

This year’s observance carries the theme “Protect our Species.” (JNPD/PIA La Union)
