Officials urge Kidapawan residents to remain alert during earthquakes

COTABATO CITY – Local officials in Kidapawan City have called on residents to remain alert and always perform the “Duck, Cover and Hold” procedure during an earthquake.

The appeal was separately made Monday by Kidapawan Mayor Joseph Evangelista and Vice Mayor Bernardo Piñol Jr. following tremors that hit Central Luzon last week.

Evangelista said residents should always remain on guard and alert to avoid getting hurt whenever a “shaking” occurs in the city.

Kidapawan City sits near an active volcano, Mt. Apo, the country’s highest peak.

Evangelista appealed to residents to check on the strength of their respective homes, especially those made of concrete materials.

Aside from the “duck, cover and hold” method, Evangelista said everyone must also consider gathering in an open space to avoid being hit by falling debris in a building or structure.

Piñol, on the other hand, called on the public to remain vigilant because earthquakes may come "anytime and anywhere".

Piñol reminded everybody that no government agency can predict when a quake will strike and being prepared is the best solution.

He advised the public never to panic when shaking starts but stay calm and alert so they would not get hurt.

He also called on the public to visit the website of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to get updates and tips on how to survive calamities. Both Evangelista and Piñol are running for the Kidapawan City mayoral post. (PNA)
