Pangasinan town holds ‘Kankanen’ festival anew

ASINGAN, Pangasinan -- The municipality of Asingan will showcase once again native rice delicacies on April 28 in its 8th Kankanen Festival.

"Kankanen” is a Pangasinan word which means native rice delicacies or sweet products made of sticky rice such as "biko" and "suman".

Asingan public information officer Romel Aguilar, in an interview Friday, said the 21 barangays of the town will present their respective recipes of kankanen, which will be eaten by the viewing public after the judging of the best recipe.

“We hope to make an entry to Guinness (World Records) next year on our next Kankanen festival,” Aguilar said.

Residents of Asingan are mostly into agriculture, especially rice planting.

The finale of the town’s Kankanen Festival, which started on April 22, would also feature stunts of Philippines Motocross champion Bornok Mangosong and his team.

“We wanted to showcase our town not just with the delicious native delicacies but also with people who are successful and pride of the country like Bornok who is from our town,” Aguilar said.

Among famous Filipinos who hailed from the town are former President Fidel V. Ramos and Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano.

“Please do visit our town. We exist and we have a lot to offer,” Aguilar said.

Meanwhile, Mangosong said the motocross will be held 1 p.m. at Angela Valdez National High School.

“I invite motocross enthusiasts to watch our stunts. This is for free,” he said. (PNA)
