PDEA-8 pushes for livelihood trainings, programs in Balay Silangan

MAASIN CITY, June 24 (PIA) -- In a joint meeting of the members of the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) and the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) in Southern Leyte recently, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has requested for an allocation for livelihood, training and other reform programs for the drug offenders housed at the Balay Silangan located in the municipality of Pintuyan.

PDEA, as one of the members of the two councils, requested an appropriation of some P3 million for the said livelihood and training programs for inclusion in the Annual Investment Plan (AIP) for 2020.

Jordan Lunesa, intelligence agent of PDEA-Southern Leyte, who requested the said amount, said the Balay Silangan is a facility for the national drug abuse reformation program where persons with substance use disorder will have their temporary shelter.

“The goal is to reform these drug offenders into law-abiding citizens of society by providing them with livelihood trainings, after-care, and social reintegration programs,” Lunesa said.

Possible livelihood trainings which will be provided, he added, will include soap making, massage training, basic carpentry, welding, haircut, among others, to give them employment opportunities.

Reform programs like continuing education and health awareness, psychological, spiritual, physical activities such as counselling, moral recovery, values formation, personal and life skills, will also be provided at the Balay Silangan.

Meanwhile, Blossom Escuyos of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) informed that the PDEA request still needs the approval of some key officials in the province. (LDL/RGC/PIA-8, Southern Leyte)
