Bulakenyos commemorate Gat Del Pilar’s 169th birth anniversary

BULAKAN, Bulacan -- Governor Daniel Fernando on Friday called on Bulakenyos to continue reliving the legacy of Bulakenyo hero, Gat. Marcelo H. Del Pilar.

Fernando made the call during the commemoration of Del Pilar’s 169th birth anniversary at the Del Pilar Shrine in Barangay San Nicolas here.

The governor led thousands of Bulakenyos to pay tribute to the “Great Propagandist” whose writings and wisdom sparked an armed revolt against Spanish colonial rule that paved the way to the nationhood of the Philippines.

"The heroism of Del Pilar and what he did to our country to be free from abuses and exploitation of the friars and Spanish government then will live and stay, all will be remembered and by commemorating all his contributions, we will remain free," Fernando added.

Likewise, the governor said a major change is taking place in this town where Del Pilar was born. “One of the world’s largest and modern airports will be built here in this town,” he said.

The governor was referring to the plan by the San Miguel Corp. to build and operate what will become the country’s biggest airport in Bulakan, Bulacan in four to six years.

Fernando, together with Vice Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado, honored the legacy of del Pilar, also known by his pen name Plaridel, in a simple yet meaningful celebration here.

They led the wreath-laying activity at the monument of del Pilar, along with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Executive Director Ludovico Badoy, Bulakan Mayor Vergel Meneses and other local officials.

Likewise, Grandmaster of the Free and Accepted Mason of the Philippines Most Worshipful Agapito Suan Jr. delivered his speech to give glory to Del Pilar, who was also the father of Philippine Masonry and Journalism.

Meanwhile, Bulacan Press Club president Erick Silverio said that despite the challenges the country is facing, the Filipino people must continue to remain firm.

He encouraged every Bulakenyo not to give up neither be afraid to express their opinions through vigilant journalism.

Del Pilar was a key figure during the struggle against Spanish occupation, and one of the leaders of the Philippine Propaganda Movement.

He was also editor-in-chief of La Solidaridad, the newspaper of Filipino propagandists who pushed for the Philippines to become a province of Spain and afford the citizens the same rights as those in the mainland.

The event which is anchored on the theme “Gat Marcelo H. Del Pilar: Inspirasyon sa Sama-samang Pag-unlad ng Bawat Bulakenyo” was made possible through the joint efforts of the Provincial Government of Bulacan, Municipal Government of Bulakan and the NHCP. (PNA)
