MMDA enforcer trying to stop robber stabbed

MANILA – A traffic enforcer of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) was stabbed on Thursday when he tried to stop a fleeing snatcher in front of a coffee shop along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard.

The incident report sent by MMDA Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Celine Pialago to the media showed that Traffic Constable III Randy Domong-as, while on duty, heard a scream from a robbery victim and tried to stop the fleeing suspect.

Domong-as was able to hit the suspect with a punch, but the suspect stabbed him with a knife and was able to escape.

He brought himself to the Pasay City General Hospital and was released later after treatment and given anti-tetanus shot.

An investigation is ongoing, with a certain Rolando Jorge named as the suspect.

Pialago said PHP20,000 cash and medical assistance would be given to Domong-as.

“Let me emphasize that it shows our enforcers are willing to go the extra mile to help in other things, such as catching criminals. It proves that there are still good people in our ranks,” Pialago said.

She said Domong-as, being a job order worker, has no medical leaves but the MMDA allowed compensatory leave to give time for his recuperation.

“Since Mr. Domong-as is one of our job order enforcers which is ‘no work, no pay,’ MMDA will give him consideration, compensatory leave as we call it,” Pialago said.

Last August 16, MMDA chairman Danilo Lim said they have been in talks with Malacañang and the Department of Budget and Management to provide their enforcers with an incentive equivalent to a hazard pay, which the Commission on Audit has disapproved by saying MMDA personnel are not qualified to get such.

Lim added that they have also spoken with officials of the Social Security System to arrange social insurance for their JO personnel so they may receive retirement benefits. (PNA)
