Science, technology kiosks to rise in six public schools in Los Baños

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna, August 30 (PIA) – Good news to science and technology enthusiasts. An information kiosk bearing thousands of science and technology resources in digital format will be made available in six public schools in Los Baños, Laguna.

Known as STARBOOKS, or Science and Technology Academic and Research Based Openly Operated Kiosks, the standalone kiosks offer science and technology resources and video-audio formats placed in user-friendly and specially-designed pods.

The project was funded by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) while the Department of Science and Technology Region 4A (DOST 4A) assists in the deployment and users training.

The STARBOOKS units were presented during the opening program of "Syensaya Festival" at the University of the Philippines Los Baños Baker Hall last August 28.

The kiosk will be available at the Paciano Rizal Elementary School (PRES) in Brgy. Putho Tuntungin; Lopez Elementary School (LES) in Brgy. Batong Malake; Los Baños National High School (LBNHS) Poblacion in Brgy. Timugan; Mayondon Elementary School (MES) in Brgy. Mayondon; College of Fisheries of the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) in Brgy. Malinta; and Bayog Elementary School (BES) in Brgy. Bayog.

Data can be accessed from the STARBOOKS even without internet access.

Schoolteacher Rochelle Diangkinay of Bayog school said the kiosk offers mostly science information unlike in the online platform where tons of other information are there to explore.

"Learners are distracted from a variety of information from the internet whereas the science and technology kiosk allows them to focus on a specific subject. It will also keep learners away from social media," she added.

“Kapag STARBOOKS (ang gamit), talagang ang utak mo kapag ang assignment ay about science... science lang (When you use STARBOOKS, and your assignment is on science... your mind will focus solely on science)," she said.

DOST Asec. Maridon Sahagun, DOST 4A Regional Director Alexander Madrigal, PCAARRD Acting Executive Director Reynaldo Ebora, and Mayor Caesar Perez led the ceremonial awarding of the kiosks.

The units will be delivered to the six school beneficiaries while an orientation on how to utilize the unit will be conducted. (Joy Gabrido/PIA4A)
