BJMP kicks off correctional consciousness week
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Oct. 23 (PIA) – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Regional Office 2 here kicked-off this year’s celebration of the National Correctional Consciousness Week with its week-long activities that highlight concern and quality service to the jails and the community.
With this year’s theme "Serbisyong may Malasakit at Kalidad, Alay sa Piitan at Komunidad", BJMP opened the celebration through a motorcade around the city, aimed at creating massive awareness among the public on the need to participate in the re-socialization and reintegration of prisoners, probationers, and parolees into society.
In a radio/tv guesting over Philippine Information Agency’s Tipon Tipan sa PIA, a regular radio/tv program held every Tuesday, JSI Shyril Mae Saquing of the BJMP – Community Relations Service called for the community to find time and visit jail facilities in the regions and to share their resources to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).
“We urge the community to also visit our jail facilities and find out for themselves how the bureau manage the jails, and how we work for the reformation of our PDL to make them productive citizens in preparation for their integration in the mainstream society,” Saquing said.
PDL from different jails will showcase their talents in painting, writing literary pieces and crafting their arts masterpieces that aim to unleash their potentials and provide them an avenue to see life's others perspective.
Saquing said those who excell in painting and have exemplary skills in different areas were provided trainings and seminars.
A good example, according to Saquing is Alyas Lito [not his true name], who is detained at the Tuguegarao City District Jail – Male Dormitory. He excells in charcoal painting and to support him, the jail's warden provided him with drawing boards and materials which he can use in finishing the orders he's receiving from clients. His income, according to Saquing is sent to his family.
Saquing said another PDL from Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya who was trained by the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA) in metal arcwelding while inside the jail now owns a machine shop after his release.
On the other hand, the BJMP will also exhibit the different products of PDL. “Please support and patronize the products of our PDL, by this, we are helping them,” Saquing said.
Meanwhile, with health as one of the priority concerns among PDL, an intensive medical activity as well as dental check-ups and provision of vaccines against flu and other vaccine preventable diseases will be intensified in all jails.
The bureau continues to bring its services close to the hearts of the community to gain support from heads and officials of different local government units, government and non-government organizations and private groups and individuals by sharing their time, resources and skills to the BJMP.
Newly installed Regional Ddirector JSSUpt.
