BFAR, Maritime police push for fishing boat registration
SAN FABIAN, Panagsinan, Dec. 28 (PIA) - The Regional Maritime Police pushes for the registration of fishing boats in the Ilocos region as it noted that a big number remain unregistered.
Col. Ruben Lacuesta, deputy regional chief of the Maritime Police, said there are only 3,434 registered three-gross tons (3GT) and below fishing boats in Region I while more than 5,000 are unregistered.
For Pangasinan alone, 814 are registered while around 2,500 are unregistered.
“Registration will cost them P700-P1,000 annually whereas if they are caught, administrative fine can range from P500 to P2,000,” Lacuesta told the Philippine Information Agency.
Lacuesta said his team, along with Philippine Navy and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), are orienting the fishermen on the rules of the sea and are encouraging them to register their fishing vessels.
The registration of municipal fishing boats three gross tons (3GT) and below has been devolved to the municipal and city local government units (LGU) by virtue of Executive Order No. 305.
From August 2005, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has ceased to perform this function. (JCR/AMB/VHS/PIA Pangasinan)
