How to become a data scientist with SPARTA online education

DAP president and CEO Engelbert Caronan Jr.

Do you want to become a data scientist, a data engineer or an analytics manager? Or do you want to be immersed in statistics, in mathematics, and in computer science?

Then Project SPARTA could open the door to endless opportunities for you.

What is Project SPARTA, you may ask? Well, the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has come up with a project dubbed, "Smarter Philippines Through Data Analytics R&D, Training and Adoption" or SPARTA.

According to DAP president and CEO Engelbert Caronan Jr., Project SPARTA aims to establish the necessary online education, research and development mechanisms and infrastructure to develop the industry of data science and analytics and to mainstream it in both the private and public sectors.

Remember the movie of 300 men who went against hordes and hordes of enemies to defend their homeland from invaders? In some ways, this movie is kind of similar to the DAP-DOST project.

Like the Spartans in the movie, who went through rigorous training in order to achieve their military prowess and discipline, Project SPARTA also aims to capacitate at least 30,000 Filipinos in the fields of data science and analytics.

Even the official logo of Project SPARTA is quite similar to that of the shield carried by the heroes in the movie.

DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña

During Project SPARTA’s grand launch on Monday at the Green Sun Hotel in Makati City, Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato Dela Peña said they would initially prioritize to train people from government, the academe, and those from the business process outsourcing or BPO who might be affected by the emergence of artificial intelligence.

The project would run for three years, with a total budget of P50.84 million. The DAP has been tapped to carry out the training to build competency in data analytics.

To help you in this noble endeavor of utilizing data-driven technologies for the good of the country, are the DOST’s Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIERD), data science powerhouse  and development partner Analytics Association of the Philippines, and online learning platform Coursebank.

Project SPARTA scholars can take courses on various fields of data science and analytics through learning pathways. Courses include learnings to become a data associate, a data steward, a data engineer, a data scientist, a data analyst, and an analytics manager.

Just register and apply for a scholarship by visiting here. https://coursebank.ph/login?next=/sparta/register/

After logging into your Coursebank account, applicants can apply to the SPARTA scholarship through the "SPARTA" link in the navigation bar at the top of any Coursebank page or through the "SPARTA Profile" link in their user menu.

Just explore each pathway and the courses available for enrollment.

Don’t worry, because for scholars, it is free. Project SPARTA is a fully funded project by the partners. After completing each course and learning pathway, you get a certificate of completion from DAP.

In today’s local and global markets, the most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data. Research shows a foreseen demand of data science and analytics workers in the Philippines in the coming years. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) projects that 340,880 data science and analytics or DSA workers will be needed in the Philippines alone by 2022.

“Data can fast-track Philippine growth, in every aspect. In the ease of doing business, for instance, we could do many things using data,” Dela Peña said.

He also encouraged those who would take and finish the courses to share their knowledge and what they have learned back with the data science community for an even accelerated pace of nation-building. After all, data science as a very promising field depends on knowledge-sharing. (PIA NCR)
