Ilocos Norte remains ASF-free

LAOAG CITY, Feb. 28 (PIA) – The province of Ilocos Norte remains free of African swine fever (ASF) amidst spread in other provinces in Northern Luzon.

ASF is a severe viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, which is also responsible for serious production and economic losses.

According to Dr. Loida Valenzuela, provincial veterinarian, the Provincial Veterinary Office continues to monitor hog raising facilities.

Likewise, she has enjoined the cooperation of the village chiefs in ensuring that preventive measures are taken.

“Saan tay bassit agiserrek iti baboy, karne iti baboy, wennu produkto a karne ti baboy manipud kadagiti lugar nga addaan ASF. Ti probisiya ti Pangasinan, Isabela, Benguet, Kalinga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Aurora, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Quezon City, Malabon, Navotas, Cavite, Quezon, ken Camarines Sur ket addan nairekord a kaskaso ti ASF kadagitoy a lugar (Let’s refrain from buying pork meat, frozen semen, and other pork products from ASF-hit areas such as Pangasinan, Isabela, Benguet, Kalinga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Aurora, Pampanga, Bulacan, Bataan, Quezon City, Malabon, Navotas, Cavite, Quezon, ken Camarines Sur," the provincial veterinarian said.

Aside from buying stocks only from ASF-free farm, Valenzuela also reminds hog raisers not to feed swill with pork meat to the hogs being raised.

“Do not feed swill from carinderias, restaurants, hotels, and resorts, and even table food scraps if pork is present. Plant-source swill is okay as long as it is cooked for 30 minutes at 30 degrees Celsius,” she added.

Communities are encouraged to report any new pig arrival in the barangay and report any unusual mortalities in pigs.

“Ireport ti aniaman a nakana a panagsakit ken ipapatay dagiti taraken tayo tapno maisayangkat a dagus ti pannakaimbestiga ti kaso dagiti taraken ket maalaan iti dara ket maanalisar iti laboratory (Report any unusual mortalities in pigs so we can immediately investigate the case and get a blood sample for laboratory analysis),” Valenzuela stated.

Intensive implementation of quarantine guidelines, document compliance of shipments, surveillance sampling, and disease investigation are also conducted to safeguard the province against the possible entry of infected swine products.

The provincial government of Ilocos Norte continues to ensure that the province remains unaffected by ASF.

The public, especially hog raisers, are encouraged to keep the environment of the hogs clean and disinfected. (JCR/AMB/MJTAB/PIA Ilocos Norte)
