Sta. Praxedes launches Gamet Recipe book

STA. PRAXEDES, Cagayan, Feb. 29 (PIA) – The Sta. Praxedes town takes pride of its gamet (pyropia alcanthoropa), one of the species of seaweeds, as it launched a book composed of compiled recipes prepared during the annual Gamet Festival cooking contest in the last 10 years.

Mayor Esterlina Aguinaldo, who's the brainchild of the recipe book partnered with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for the realization of the said book.

One of the highlights of the 11th Gamet Festival is the Book Launching of
Gamet Recipes, a compilation of the different winning recipes presented
during the past cooking contests.

She said from the start of the festival in 2009, various recipes took centerstage and it would be nice if it will be made known not only to Praxedenians and the people of region 02 but even worldwide since 'gamet' can be found in the different parts of the world popularly known as “nori” in Japan.

The nutritional content of gamet has prompted the LGU and BFAR office here to popularize the recipes while Ma. Gisella Lonzaga, the National Nutrition Coordinator here urged the public to include seaweeds in their meal plan because of its vitamin and mineral content.

According to  healthline.com, a 3.5 ounces or 100 grams of seaweed provides calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber , magnesium manganese, iodine, sodium, calcium, folate, potassium, iron, copper, and small amounts of nutrients like omega-3 and 6 fatty acids; vitamins A, C, E; phosphorus, B vitamins and choline.

Aside from being highly nutritious, it helps with thyroid function, helps prevent diabetes, help with weight loss, protect the heart, among others.

The book can be availed at the office of the mayor in Sta. Praxedes town. (MDCT/GVB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
