Laguna PNP adopts indigent families amidst pandemic
BAY, Laguna, May 9 (PIA) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) Officers of Laguna continuously reach out to indigent families in the province through their Adopt a Family Program.
The Laguna Police Provincial Office (PPO) is implementing the Adoption of Indigent Family, which is a program of the PNP that aims to support the basic necessities of the indigents and their families, particularly those belonging to the poorest of the poor who are most at risk of the long term adverse effects of the implementation of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) to their livelihood.
“Laguna PPO adopted this program under the ‘Pulis CALABARZON, Kaagapay Ko!’ program to alleviate these adverse effects on the imposition of the ECQ since the province was not spared from COVID-19,” stated PCpl Evita D. Teope, Editor of Laguna PPO - Public Information Office (PIO).
At the same time, she pointed out, this program will help prevent their beneficiaries from leaving their homes because they no longer need to go out just to secure food where they may be at risk of contracting the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), thus, promoting the protection of public health.
In this program, each of the Laguna PPO personnel was encouraged to adopt at least two or three poor families. They will then be providing the families they have adopted with basic needs while the ECQ is implemented in the province.
“Also, we mobilized assistance from Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and private individuals to support us in our resources for the provision of these families’ basic necessities,” she added.
Since the Sangguniang Barangay is the primary witness of the socioeconomic status of families within their locality, the Police - Community Affairs Development (CAD) Sections of the City and Municipal Police Stations (MPS) and Mobile Force Companies in the province coordinated with the Barangay Officials to identify families that belong to the marginalized sector and poorest of the poor.
“No forms are required or needed in their identification. These families are prioritized as the beneficiaries of the program while the ECQ is being implemented.”
As of May 4, 2020, a total of 2,553 indigent families in the province composed of 11,420 family members had benefited from the P1,009,025.00 worth of goods they have doled out. They were providing their target beneficiaries with some of the basic needs of families including rice, eggs, canned goods, instant noodles, coffee, sugar, as well as milk and diapers for babies, and even cash that came from their own salaries.
“We are counting more to provide as long as the ECQ is still being imposed in our area of responsibility.”
So far, they have already reached all the cities and municipalities in the province as Teope tpld Philippine Information Agency Calabarzon.
“We are further reaching out to those in the barangays situated far from the capital of the towns through the activation of our Pulis sa Barangay.”
With this, Teope explained that each police officer who is previously assigned and functioning as “Pulis sa Barangay” were activated to assist in the identification of the target beneficiaries in addition to their regular tasks.
She also said that anyone may refer families to Laguna PPO whomever they think needs assistance from the said program.
“In fact, we have addressed some of the constituents who have asked help by sending us messages thru our Official FB accounts and pages.”
She assured that as long as the ECQ is imposed, they shall continue adopting and stretching out a helping hand to the vulnerable families in the province of Laguna.
It is reassuring that the uniformed personnel of this province is committed to serve the people beyond maintaining peace and order as PCpl. Teope shared that this program is being localized down to the city and municipal levels.
Various Municipal and City Police Stations in the province have been doing activities parallel with the Adoption of Indigent Families Program during the ECQ even long before the Laguna PPO has formally come up with it. (Joy Gabrido/PIA4A)
