UPOU offers free course on remote learning in prep for new normal

BAY, Laguna, May 20 (PIA) – The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) is offering an Executive Course on Remote Teaching and Learning for free which shall run from May 25 to 29, 2020, to prepare the education sector to the new normal.

UPOU generously opened the free course to assist the education sector in shifting to an online-based curriculum that is called for as the nation faces threat of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

“The Free Online Executive Course is an initiative of UPOU under the #OPENFight against COVID-19…This free online course is also in performance of UPOU’s mandate under RA 10650 and to provide the much needed capability building as universities/schools are now preparing for the shift to the new normal,” UPOU Chancellor Melinda Bandalaria stated.

Republic Act (RA) 10650, also known as Open Learning and Distance Education Act, as defined is “an act expanding access to educational services by institutionalizing open distance learning in levels of tertiary education and appropriating funds therefor.”

The Chancellor explained that there are three major components of the series of free training programs they oath to offer.

The first one is this Executive Course for the University/School Officials or Administrators who are tasked with the planning of the opening of classes for upcoming school year and putting in place an enabling environment towards their school’s transition from face-to-face (F2F) to Remote Teaching and Learning.

The said course is composed of three modules which will be delivered asynchronously. Module 1 will be on Remote Teaching and Learning: Concepts, Models, and Technologies. Module 2 will tackle Quality Assurance for Remote Teaching and Learning.  The last module, Module 3,  is about the Strategic Planning to Transition to Remote Teaching and Learning. This online executive course

The two other free courses they would soon open, she said, are for the teachers and for the technical personnel of the university who will provide technical assistance to the online component of their teaching and learning delivery.

“All these training programs are planned to be implemented before the next school year opens in July or August,” she pronounced.

Bandalaria explained that their expected impact of this initiative to the Philippine education is for the learning to continue even at the time of COVID-19 pandemic.

Also, she added that they intend “for the online component to be integrated into the teaching and learning even after COVID-19, in the form of blended mode of instructional delivery as a strategy to improve the quality of instruction in the country; promote inclusive education; and integrate the learning and acquisition of 21st century competencies into the teaching-learning process.”

For interested stakeholders, the course will be available at the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Platform of UPOU which can be accessed through model.upou.edu. ph. While, inquiries may be sent to model@upou.edu.ph.
