Cagayan celebrates 437th founding anniversary

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, June 29 (PIA) - - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cagayanos are celebrating the 437th Aggao nac Cagayan through a flag raising program attended by very few officials and employees of the provincial government, a virtual thanks giving mass and an online film viewing, the simplest celebration ever.

The ‘Aggao nac Cagayan’ is annual celebration of the province to commemorate its founding anniversary.

This year's theme “Mappa Sigiran", an Ibanag term meaning "going north", is inspired by Governor Manuel Mamba's vision to reconnect the province to its neighboring developed countries in the north for possible economic opportunities.

Mamba said the COVID-19 pandemic practically changed many usual things in the world but there are opportunities it offers to the province.

"There are silver lining in every critical juncture of humanity. What we need to do is to unite and cooperate to fight the pandemic," he said.

He added that his proposal to dredge the mouth of the Cagayan River will lead to more viable trade and economic activities in the province as he sees potential of reopening of the Aparri seaport as well as mitigating the impact of disasters that the river may create during rainy seasons.

"If we reopen the Aparri port, we [are] also open[ing] our doors for commerce and trade with the countries in the north like China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea," Mamba said.

He said the Provincial Government will initially approve dredging plan from the mouth of the Cagayan River in Aparri town up to eight kilometers upstream, the part of the proposed bridge to be constructed in Camalaniugan town. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
