Leyte town lifts preemptive lockdown in sub-village

TACLOBAN CITY – The local government of Kananga in Leyte has lifted the preemptive lockdown enforced in its sub-village, where a resident tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

“The contact tracing on the patient residing in Sitio (sub-village) Kawayan, Rizal village has been completed and seven out of eight identified close contacts tested negative of the virus. The result of the remaining sample is yet to be released,” said Mayor Manuel Vicente Torres in an executive order issued late Monday.

The local government placed the community under strict movement restriction on June 17, a day after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that a resident is the town’s first case, confined at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center.

“This is a part of our preemptive measure to ensure the safety of my constituents here in Kananga. The lockdown was meant to prevent the potential spread or local transmission of the disease,” Torres said.

To date, the town has confirmed four Covid-19 patients, including three active cases and one death, according to the DOH monitoring report.

Meanwhile, a total of 524 cases have been confirmed in Eastern Visayas since the outbreak, including 132 recoveries and three deaths.

The majority of the confirmed cases in the region are returning residents, including locally stranded individuals and repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFW), the DOH said.

Due to the sudden spike of confirmed cases in the region since the start of June, several local governments have decided to temporarily stop accepting returning residents to decongest its quarantine centers and focus its efforts on containing the spread of the virus.

On June 26, the Department of the Interior and Local Government officially suspended the travel of LSIs to the region until July 9, upon approval of the National Task Force Against Covid-19. (PNA)
