DOLE hires 850 interns thru GIP

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Sept. 28 (PIA) - - To cushion the impact of the Corona Cirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Cagayan-Batanes field office has hired 850 interns.

Prexie A. Caronan, head, said that the interns were hired through the Government Internship Program (GIP) which aims to open up job opportunities not only to young workers but also to those who lost their jobs as effect of retrenchments or closure of establishments due to the pandemic.

“Despite the effects of the pandemic, DOLE stands to be one of the victors of the many hopeless jobseekers and remains as a strong advocate in achieving the government’s thrust of inclusive growth through massive employment generation and poverty reduction. While the DOLE recognizes the right to participation and self-development of the youth, it also ensures the safety and protection of the interns,” she added.

She said each worker is entitled to a P370 per day stipend, an accident insurance coverage for one year with the Government Insurance System and a Certificate of Completion at the end of the contract.

Caronan further explained that the interns who also serve as manpower complement are not only expected to augment the government’s services essential in curbing out the negative effects of this global pandemic but also assist in the monitoring of projects as well as in the implementation of department's employment facilitation programs such as profiling of child laborers, encoding of registrants in the Skills Registry System, assisting public school and hospital personnel and other functions not highly technical and hazardous in nature.

"This is also an opportunity for the interns to learn life skills in the workplace and introduce them to public service as their contribution to nation building," Caronan added.

The GIP is a component of Executive Order No. 139 s. 1993 under the Kabataan 2000 and DOLE Administrative Order No. 260-15. (Oliver T. Baccay with reports from Froctoso C. Agustin)
