DPWH builds 22 modular isolation centers in E. Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has constructed 22 isolation facilities in Eastern Visayas this year to help boost the government’s fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The DPWH has spent PHP201.22 million for the construction of 802-bed capacity quarantine centers in the region’s six provinces, Ma. Rosario Margallo, DPWH Region 8 focal person on isolation facilities project, said on Thursday.

“We will build more facilities like this in the next few months since we have been receiving formal requests from local government units. This is our commitment to help stop the spread of Covid-19,” Margallo said in a phone interview.

From January to June, the DPWH built isolation facilities in Tacloban City, Ormoc City, Palo, and Dagami in Leyte; Naval in Biliran; Maasin City in Southern Leyte; Borongan City in Eastern Samar; Calbayog City in Samar; Catbalogan City in Samar; and Catarman in Northern Samar.

The DPWH constructed some of these facilities within the existing hospitals such as the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban City and several provincial hospitals.

“The construction of the quarantine facility followed the standard designs and plans proposed by the DPWH central office in collaboration with the Department of Health. This facility will assist our hospitals that are overwhelmed with the continuous increase in Covid-19 cases,” she added.

The project is modular or container-type with individual rooms, restrooms, and air-conditioning units. Each room is with a bed, according to Margallo.

The isolation facility has a nurse station, male and female nurse room with toilet, water tank, generator and transformer, sanitation area, and septic tank.

It also has dining, living, laundry, kitchen, and sanitation areas as well as water and septic tanks.

Of the 802 beds, confirmed Covid-19 patients occupied 211 in the region as of June 30.

After the pandemic, these will be converted into evacuation centers. (PNA)
