3 men survive vehicular crash in Maguindanao

COTABATO CITY – Although they have to spend their New Year’s Eve in the hospital, three men remain thankful for cheating death when they jumped off their wayward truck which fell into a 90-foot deep cliff in Maguindanao Sunday.

“At least we are alive,” truck driver Bobby Menez, 40, of Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, said in his bed Monday at a government hospital here.

Presence of mind made Menez alert his son, Ayvee and the cargo truck helper Goy Gullon, to abandon the truck as its brake system had malfunctioned and could no longer be controlled.

As the trio landed in the concrete pavement of the highway, the truck fell off into a 90-foot deep cliff along the national highway in Timanan, South Upi, Maguindanao at past 12 noon Sunday.

The truck was negotiating a downhill section of the highway when its brakes failed.

“We no longer have brakes, jump, jump, the truck is heading to a cliff, jump,” Menez recalled telling his son and helper.

Bobby said the truck was empty. They were on the way back to Lebak from Davao City where they delivered agricultural products when the mishap occurred. The trio will welcome the New Year in the hospital. (PNA)
