8,000 jobs await jobseekers on Labor Day jobs fair in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY, Apr. 30 (PIA) – Around 8,000 jobs will be available for job applicants during the Labor Day jobs and livelihood fairs on Wednesday, May 1 which will be held at the Tacloban Convention Center in this city.

In a press briefing Monday, Regional Director Yahya Centi of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Eastern Visayas said the jobs fair, which will offer around 1,200 local jobs and over 6,000 overseas jobs, will feature "Trabaho, Negosyo at Kabuhayan (TNK)" and business opportunities.

Centi added that available jobs will be offered by 44 employers, 32 of which are local and 12 are overseas.

“A separate jobs fair will be held simultaneously in Ormoc City in coordination with the city government,” he said.

DOLE-8 conducted on April 22-26 a pre-registration at their regional office in Tacloban to make it easier to match a qualified applicant with an employer and facilitate entry to the jobs fair and the search for a skills-fit job.

Jobseekers may also register on the day of the jobs fair.

DOLE-8 has lined up participating local employers in sales and marketing, hotel and restaurant, business process outsourcing, academe and financial institutions while the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has lined up the participation of licensed private recruitment agencies needing job orders for immediate deployment abroad.

Centi said they are targeting around 15 percent to 30 percent of applicants who will be hired on the spot or even more as DOLE noted an increasing trend in labor force participation rate in the region.

Meanwhile, the livelihood component of the event will offer participants with counseling, product display and sales, franchising exhibits, video presentation of successful entrepreneurial, skills training and job generation stories.

Aside from jobs and livelihood services, the DOLE will also bring into the event its most common services such as the career guidance counseling and referral services.

DOLE advised applicants to bring with them their application documents needed during the jobs fair such as resume, ID pictures, certificate of employment (for those formerly employed), diploma or transcript of records, and authenticated copy of birth certificate.

The Labor Day celebration in Tacloban City will start with a Eucharistic Mass at 5:30 a.m. at Sto. Niño Church and will be followed with  a motorcade around the city’s major thoroughfares going to the Convention Center for the commemorative program, jobs and livelihood fairs.

This year’s Labor Day celebration banners the theme, "Pagpupugay sa Manggagawang Pilipino,” which aimed at giving due honor to the working men and women for their dedicated service which ultimately contributed to the economic growth and development particularly in the region having achieved a 5.9 percent growth rate in the Gross Regional Domestic Product in 2018 from 1.8 percent in 2017.
