SC asked to stop Meralco 'bill deposit' collection

MANILA -- A petition before the Supreme Court (SC) Tuesday seeks to stop publicly-listed Manila Electric Company (Meralco) from imposing and collecting bill deposit from its customers, which have reached PHP29 billion as of last year.

In its 36-page petition, the petitioners said the imposition of bill deposit by Meralco, being a public utility, is illegal.

The petitioners said the Court should declare as illegal and void the Bill Deposit provisions in the Magna Carta for Residential Electricity Consumers and promulgated by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on June 17, 2004, which became the basis of Meralco to collect the fees from its customers.

The suit also urged the Court to order the ERC to implement a refund of the bill deposits to the consumers. (PNA)
