MCCT beneficiary’s daughter benefits from DSWD’s GIP

CEBU CITY, June 17 (PIA) -- Eighty young people are currently deployed in the offices of  Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-7), DSWD Residential Facilities, Social Welfare and Development (SWAD) offices, and in different Local Government Units (LGUs) under the Government Internship Program (GIP) this year.

GIP aims to provide a chance for the youth to acquire life skills and learn etiquettes related to labor and employment while earning a stipend for 30 days that may help them fund for their daily school sustenance in the coming year.

Among the youth given the chance to work in DSWD is Johanna Heart Genon, whose family used to live in the streets.

Johanna is now a beneficiary of DSWD’s Modified Conditional Cash Transfer (MCCT) Program.

Johanna expressed gratitude to the government and DSWD for the experience and insights that she will be bringing with her as she steps into a permanent/official work in the future.

“Thankful kayo ko nga natagaan ko’g chance nga maka-experience kung unsa diay ang trabahuon dirisa DSWD. Akong expectation sauna nga dili ra kaayo kapoy o hayahay ra kaayo ang trabaho diri, pero pagkasulod na nako diri through GIP, naka-ingon ko nga dili diay dali (I am very thankful that I have been given the chance to experience working here in DSWD. I used to believe that working in a government agency is just relaxed, but when I started my internship I realized it is not easy),” she said.

Through the GIP, DSWD-7 has provided opportunity to young individuals who are beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), out-of-school and in-school youth to make use of their available time during summer in a productive manner.

Johanna also shared that the money she will earn will cover the expenses for her school supplies as well as for her siblings.

“Ang sobra sa akong ma-sweldo ako pu’ng e-save para sa sunod na pud nga semester (The extra money from my salary will be allotted for my expenses for the next semester),” she added.  (jsme/PIA7-Cebu/DSWD-7)
